I do love those Eastern Shore Sunsets!
This one was particularly wonderful to see and take photos of. There were a line of photographers along the shore for this one, and I stopped and invited each and every one to the second meeting of the Eastern Shore Camera Club. This sunset was perfectly orange for the celebration of this October 31, 2009. The heron watches the water waiting for the perfect catch. This photo was taken without a flash and no tripod...not as sharp as it could be, but still worth remembering.

This Heron was waiting for the fishermen to provide dinner at the Fairhope Pier tonite. The sunset was slow to happen, but ended in a brilliant red show.

Hawks

There was a exceptionally large 'kettle' of hawks at Fort Morgan the first day of the Alabama Coastal Birdfest. Take a look at the slideshow to your right on this page for more pictures. A volunteer group that bands birds to keep track of their migration patterns was working to show our group all about what they do.

Fairhope Public Library....

During the Alabama Coastal BirdFest this past weekend, I saw everything from a 'birdseye' point of view you might say. I attended some of the events at the Fairhope Public Libary and looked up to find a birds nest on the light fixture. The Libary is a big supporter of the BirdFest in more ways than they probably realize.

I have been attending the John L. Borom Alabama Coastal Birdfest this past few days. It is an incredible event and you can lean more about it at this link: http://www.alabamacoastalbirdfest.com/
The photo of me releasing this tiny bird was taken by Kathy Hicks who designed the poster for the event and is an exceptional photographer.
I had a great time on Thursday morning going to the bird banding in Fort Morgan.
I want to personally thank D. Fran Morley for her dedication and experienced organization of the event. Thanks for letting me volunteer and enjoy this experience.

The last thing I did before leaving Fairhope, Alabama to drive north was to put my feet on the sand by Mobile Bay. Nice warm water and beach to my toes!!

Cool Morning Walk

This morning was the first cool refreshing morning in a long stretch here in LA (lower alabama) it was 64 degrees F. I took a nice leisurely stroll on the Fairhope Pier wearing a sweater!! The blue herons were out in full force along with the regular compliment of gulls.
A few months back a friend sent me this ingenious vacation picture web page. I took their great idea and used it here to document my journey, simply shooting a picture of my feet...wherever I am. Just wanted you to know I cannot take credit for the cool idea.

Blue Heron at Sunset

Well... this Blue Heron decided to perch on the Purple Martin house at the Fairhope Pier!! It was actually more of a 'feet' that you might imagine. There is a wire installed across the roof line of the bird house to prevent birds from sitting directly on the roof (?). This is fine for the small birds who use the wire as a perch, however this heron had to balance his feet OVER the wire, leaning on his toes to give support for his large body. Pretty funny watching the balancing act with his feet.

Oh yeah, and the gorgeous sunset was pretty hard to take your eyes off of too.

Sharing A Sunset

A real treat this week for me....having my Mother join me at the Fairhope Pier for a sunset. I took a photo of her to honor our time together and I am sharing it with you. It was a beautiful sunset with the fish jumping, the seagulls swooping down to pick out a morsel and the pelicans skimming the water.

Simplicity Experiment

Looking back at an experiment that took place a while back in our country... a life in Central Kentucky in the 1800's that was lived by what people have called the "Shakers". I have been interested in Voluntary Simplicity after reading Thoreau in my late teens. Here in central Kentucky you can see an exquisite example of that. I have recently been there to photograph the village as it is preserved for all of us to see and enjoy. I will be teaching a photography workshop in April 2008 at this picturesque location. (page still under construction, be patient)

The Shakers were nineteenth-century America's largest and best-known communal society. In 1774, nine devout Shakers sailed from Liverpool, England to New York City to escape religious persecution. By the 1840s, nearly 3,500 Shakers lived in communities from Maine to Kentucky.

The Shakers chose a peaceful way of life. They were celibate, believed in racial and gender equality and freedom from prejudice. A quest for simplicity and perfection is reflected in their fine designs and craftsmanship, and today the term Shaker-made is synonymous with excellence around the world.

In 1805, a group of Shakers came to central Kentucky and established a village they named Pleasant Hill. Although the population peaked at almost 500 in the 1820s, the community thrived well past the mid-nineteenth century, acquiring over 4,000 acres of farmland.

Gratitude

Gratitude has been on my mind a great deal lately. There is so much to be grateful for and I have taken to the act of recognizing and acknowledging it regularly during the day. It has a cumulative effect so the more you are grateful for the more grateful you become. So plan your gratitude list and see your life become a wonderful reflection of your inner peace and love.

Cast Net Fishing

Late afternoon on the banks of the Ohio River in Madison Indiana offered a surprise for me. There was a man using a cast net to fish. It was a surprise for me because as long as I have lived near the Ohio and Kentucky Rivers I have never seen anyone use a cast net. When I lived on the Gulf Coast in Alabama, it was a daily event for me to watch the cast net fishermen carefully gather the net in a very specific way and heave the large round net over their heads...releasing it at just the perfect moment to fall in the water in a wide circle of a net over whatever is swimming below in the water.
It is a wonderful thing to watch the precision and timing involved. So to see it unexpectedly on the banks of the Ohio River was a real treat. If you look in the lower right corner of the river scene below the bridge you will see the cast net fisherman with the net in mid-air. Wonderful surprises await us every day, just keep your eyes open.

The Larger Picture

Many times as I do digital review of the images I have taken I notice one small section of a photo that stands out. I was not taking of a picture of that particular thing when shooting, and the larger picture as a whole just does not work. This whole thought of not seeing the forest for the trees can be something worth considering. Hummm, today I wonder what I may be missing because I wasn't looking close enough. Consider this.

Changes....

Our planet has always been in a state of flux and change. We were created in the midst of this change. The current changes can be quite unsettling for those of us who pay attention. I think that our lifestyles are in need of change, taking a serious look at the last 50 years of unrelenting 'taking' from the earth with not a thought of giving back has put us in a serious spiral...the direction is truly unknown.

I watched a short piece on PBS about how there is a 'spiral' of trash out in the Pacific Ocean that collects because of the currents. That each sea bird and turtle has a gut that is getting filled with plastic trash that cannot be digested or passed through the digestive system.

I do have the lifelong sense that it is important to GIVE back to those who give to us. Even if we are not sure who gave it, we can pass it on by doing "random acts of kindness". So I would urge you to think about how you can GIVE back to the earth what she has given to you.

THINK for this day about what the EARTH gives to you. Make a long list and take time to really reflect on what you can do. If you make 5 changes in your life that will give back to Mother Earth then you are starting an important part of the change that we want to BE.

On my last photo walk I had a profound sense of peace and connectedness with nature. There was a stillness that joined my SELF with all that surrounded me. My feet could feel every stone and twig I stepped on with such clarity. My eyes were able to perceive more clearly than normally. The sky was exceptionally blue with white fluffy clouds, the white tree trunks were bones against the sky. The animals that had been to the diminishing pool of water left their energy and tracks behind for me to sense. There were deer and raccoon tracks, & many species of flying creatures. The plants were vibrant with life, producing the seeds that would provide their future. Smells of drying mud and clear fresh air, rocks with iron stains, moss wringing the last bit of moisture out of the stream to further its existence. Being.

what is real....

One of the things that always amazed me was that nature could give you a picture of something that if you tried to make it up you just couldn't. When I painted using watercolor I usually 'made' up my landscapes and skyscapes, some of them were truly imaginative, and in the realm of seeming impossible. So now as I spend time behind the lens I take pictures and think that if I made that up it wouldn't seem possible. Just remember to keep your imagination alive and creating because Mother Nature offers you an example a minute of creativity and reality. Being Real...Light-Feather.

The Look of Fall

We are having record high temperatures here for beginning the second week of October 2007. The fall foliage has not yet reached its color however the leaves are falling creating a carpet that catches a photographers eye. I like to catch the light in that JUST SO way on an individual leaf creating a portrait of that exact moment. I have often gone back to get a shot and found in only a minute what I saw had disappeared because the light had changed. Same way with life...catch it in the moment or it may be gone.

One of the things I love about looking at buildings in the right light is to see their "bones" clearly displayed. This building was constructed after WWII at General Butler State Park and is used as a picnic shelter.

Changing

I have a flower box sitting on the steps of my front porch. It was planted with pansies early in the spring this year. They have survived the hot dry summer and now in the cooler weather of fall they are again producing abundant blooms. As I walked onto the porch with my camera the other day I noticed that the three largest blooms were lined up ... so photogenic... and atypical for a pot of flowers to behave this way. They didn't stay lined up very long, so this is a 'moment' in our changing Universe.

Clouds are one of my favorite subjects. This one is a favorite, taken on the drive between Shelbyville and Eminence KY. I am cloud watching today as another batch of rain showers are overhead. YES!!

Abundance

You can always find abundance around you, if you don't see it just turn your eyes in a different direction. Fall is a few weeks early this year, but still filled with color. One of my favorite places to find great photos are the Farmers Markets around the world. I have taken pictures in Uzbekistan, Russia, Ukraine and all around the USA at vegetable stands and markets. What I find is color, people, animals and one of the most interesting of human activities.

We have a incredibly sunny fall day today. The rain has passed, but we are about 10 inches short of rain this year and had 1.7 inches of rain yesterday. Thus the theme again today of a fall leaf in water.
